The residents of this rural steading moved
to the East Lothian countryside to relax
Rural Steading into retirement. They had more spare time
and wanted to invest in a beautiful outdoor
space. Cars parked on the sea of gravel in
front of their house blocked the stunning
view from their house.
We reconfigured this space and planted a
hedge to divert the driveway. The couple
now sit out on their patio looking out over a
very soft and natural garden. This is filled with
billowing planting that blends beautifully into
the landscape beyond.
They can dip their toes in a cool tranquil
contemporary pool on a hot summer’s day.
Or watch the stunning East Lothian sunsets
reflected in it’s surface. Or raindrops rippling
out when the heavens open. Wondering
through a rustic wooden frame, the
grandchildren are running around on the lawn.
Outside the back door, the owners now
enjoy their morning coffee and bacon rolls
in their new sunny, secluded kitchen garden.
Here, they are surrounded by fragrant roses
and herbs. There is space to grow fruit and
vegetables in raised beds for a tasty supper.
They love being able to grab a handful of
fresh herbs to throw in the cooking pot.

The owners of this beach house were looking
for an outdoor space to retreat from their
Beach House hectic work lives and connect with nature
and the landscape. We created a garden to
blend in with the beautiful surroundings in
this coastal location. Gentle curved paths
and borders look natural and reflect the sand
dunes and bays beyond. Boulders and pebble
paths link the garden to the landscape.
They also wanted to minimise their
environmental impact. To achieve this, we
worked with the existing conditions on site,
which is effectively an extension of the
beach. We carefully selected a plant palette,
using plants that thrive in dry sand and salt
laden winds without irrigation. We planted
into the sand, rather than importing large
quantities of soil and irrigating intensively.
The plants adapted to the harsh conditions,
becoming drought tolerant and tougher.
